The first of the cantilevered monoplane wing designs with a backward retracting landing gear which turned 90º to lie inside the wing, the Curtiss Warhawk was an all-metal design which fought successfully in the Sino-Japanese war as well as on several fronts during the early years of World War II. The design was purchased by many countries, particularly France, and built under licence. Several modified P-40's, known as Mohawks served in Burma, and the final version, known as the Tomahawk, finished the war in the North African campaign.
