According to some reports, the Hampden was an outstanding aircraft on paper, being called the first Fighter-Bomber of the era. Unfortunately, although it was fast and carried a heavy bomb load, it lacked sufficient armament and suffered heavy losses by enemy fighters when engaged in the bombing of Naval installations at the start of World War II.
Quarters were so cramped that the crew could not move about in flight, and the machine earned the unenviable name of the 'Flying Suitcase.'
