First built in 1935, the Hurricane was at first by far the most numerous of the RAF's fighter aircraft and bore the brunt of the Battle Of Britain. Designed by Sydney Camm, the monoplane metal wing fighter was first powered by a Goshawk engine.
This was later replaced by the more powerful 1,280 HP Merlin with a 3-bladed metal constant-speed propeller instead of the wooden fixed pitch 2-blader. Eight machine guns in the wings replaced the original four, and later versions carried four 40mm 'tank buster' cannons.
